A message from the Premier of Nunavut

With Canada’s youngest and fastest growing population, the Government of Nunavut recognizes the importance of preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. As part of the Canadian Northwest FASD Partnership, we are pleased to be working with other jurisdictions to develop strategies that address the needs of our communities and deliver high quality care, support and prevention programs for FASD.

The Government of Nunavut addresses the causes of FASD through knowledge sharing initiatives and health promotion campaigns. We partner with the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program to support pregnant women and raise awareness about FASD, offer programs in our high schools, and support people with FASD and their families.

Avoiding alcohol at all stages of pregnancy is one of the best things a mother can do to ensure the health of her child.  As part of our work to address FASD, we encourage all Nunavummiut to help women avoid alcohol during pregnancy, and support children and adults affected by FASD. We can help each other make healthy choices for ourselves and our future generations.

In order to address FASD, we must reflect on traditional Inuit values. We must respect and care for others in our families and communities, and work together on this common cause. Together we can make a difference.
